How Soccer Explains the American Culture Wars

This chapter of How Soccer Explains the World perfectly describes the continuing divide in American culture, but with the twist of soccer. In the chapter there are those who believe strongly that soccer damages democracy and American values, and some that believe America should make soccer a bigger part of their culture than it already is (right now America has a few soccer leagues, such as the MLS and NWSL), but only the playoffs are really nationally televised and even then it has to compete with football, basketball, baseball and hockey which at least in terms of television, are favored by broadcasters.

In terms of outside of soccer, the same could be said about the divide in America with many other things, whether its immigration, abortion, or even about standing for the national anthem. This chapter, shows that divide is there, and it’s growing.
